For the past five years I have spent my summers at the lake. Now, you might think that I am sitting at my cabin, relaxing and spending my time selfishly on myself, but that would be a mistake. You see, I have been volunteering at a youth camp down at the lake and it has been a blast. I love spending time outdoors and making a difference in the lives of the youth. But despite the fact that I love the work that I do at the camp, it takes a lot of work to get everything ready.
In fact, I have been out at the camp for the past five weekends getting things ready. There are many tasks that need to be done before the camp is ready for guests. Some of the jobs are obvious like filling the wood sheds with wood, cleaning the bunkhouses and fixing the roads after winter. But the other tasks are less obvious such as making sure the water system still works, ensuring the sewer system is not blocked or has cracked pipes and patching the cabins to repair any damage that might have happened during the winter months. There are so many jobs that we have a list of tasks, and there is a committee that assigns each one of us counselors tasks to be completed before the camp opens.
I am hoping to get all of my chores done before the middle of May because we are going away on a vacation as a family then. We’ll certainly enjoy that week away as most of my summer is booked with my work at the camp. I think next summer I will spend more time with my own family instead of helping out down at the camp, but for now, I’ll do what I love – be a counselor at summer camp this year.
